wifi paradox
as i was playing on my computer that day, i noticed a very strange message. i had just been playing online, but then my wifi status showed this message: 'you are currently connected to the network'. but just above it there was another message: 'not connected'. wow, how exactly does that work? i am connected, but i'm not connected. deep, huh? thats like the technological equivalent to 'what is the sound of one hand clapping?'i think it just blew my mind, man.
someones in the kitchen with mema...
i'm pretty sure he gained about two pounds over this week, which doesnt sound like much until you realize that he is only seven pounds to begin with! back to your healthy dog food poco- youve got some weight to lose! (just like the rest of us...)
calm before the storm
chistmas afternoon was a nice and peaceful one. the kids werent coming over until 3:30, so we had some time to relax and enjoy the day. diana lounged in the lazy boy and read while papa and i played on our computers. here you can see poco perching oddly on papa's legs. everyone was quiet and relaxed, that is until the kids dropped by an hour early! yikes! let the christmas craziness begin!
sneaking a first gift
when we got back from dinner, mom and dad had a little gift for each of us! we were both pretty excited and tore into them. diana got the game rack-o which we had just played the other night. diana was really excited because she really liked the game- now she and i can play it back home! for my gift papa got me a toy! you might think that at 30 years old i would be too old for a toy, but you would be wrong! i opened it up and it was jake sully, the main character from 'avatar'! awesome! i was really genuinely excited about the toy! (in fact, it soon became a bit of a mascot for us later in the week- i'll get to that soon...) in order to celebrate our new gifts, we tore open rack-o and played again with mom that night!
grandma robin
we werent going to see my grandma on christmas, so we picked her up for dinner on christmas eve. she lives in a retirement community, so we drove over and stopped in. we had a couple gifts for her, my mom gave her a calender with all the extended family birthdays on it, and diana and i got her a little devotional book written by many different women christian authors. she loved them both! we went down to the truck and drove over to red robin for dinner. gram had never been there, so she was in for a treat! it was great to just sit and chat with gram about what has been going on in her life lately and catch her up with what we've been up to. she always loves to see us, and we wanted to give her a chance to spend some time with her diana, her favorite new grandchild (i assume). when we got back to the vehicle the weather had been turning quite bad and the truck was covered in half an inch of frozen rain! it was a very slow drive back home!
frostys and fries
after the bookstore we met up with mom and papa at wendys for a quick lunch. the kids love wendys, and so does diana, so we were all set! while we were eating aves discovered one of life's great truths: french fries are really good dipped in frostys! the weather was starting to turn on us, we knew tonight was going to be a bit treacherous. the kids knew that christmas was only days away and that meant presents were only days away- you could just see it in their eyes, they were counting down the hours!

book search
jill gave us a call in the morning and asked if we wanted to meet up with her to do some last minute shopping. i rarely turn down a chance to see the kids, so we got ready and met them at kregel bookstore to get a couple things. we wandered around with the kids, bubba and aves had their arms filled with different videos they were determined to have their mother buy for them! i found a cool pop-up book of narnia that the kids got a kick out of (except aves, she was scared by the pop-up of aslan the lion). jill found what she needed, and a bit more, but the kids were unsuccessful at convincing her to buy them the mountain of videos they presented her with. maybe next time...
the after party
after our double date with jeffry lee, diana and i headed over to see the rest of the guys at the chicago drive pub. jeffry lee and his girl headed there as well. we got there and the rest of the guys, aaron, keith and freddie were sitting in a booth, but moved with us over to a table so we could all fit. jeffry lee had warned us ahead of time that there would be a one man band playing there who was not very good, but we went anyway. he was correct on his assessment... fortunately he was wrapping up his set, that meant that we were finally able to actually hear each other and be able to talk! we hung out there for a couple hours. we wished everyone a merry christmas and headed home- time to get some much needed sleep!
double date
since jeffry lee has a new lady friend, i decided to take advantage of the situation and invite them out for a double date with diana and i! i've never been out on a double date with any of the guys, so this was an exciting new experience. jeffry lee was up for it, but was really nervous about the whole thing. diana and i had met jeffry lee's lady a couple nights earlier and thought she was great, so we knew this would be fun. diana and i got there and found our seats, jeffry lee and his date arrived soon afterward. jeffry lee said he was really nervous before he arrived, but mellowed out soon after they arrived. we had a great time, we just sat and talked for a couple hours, enjoying the time with friends and getting to know jeffry lee's girl. both diana and i really liked her and thought she was a lot of fun. much of the time was spent messing around with our new phones- i had just gotten one before we met for dinner, and jeffry lee had just gotten one the day before as well!
splish splash
so there we were, getting ready to go out with mom and papa. before we left i had to stop in the restroom for a second. i reach down and pull the seat up off the toilet so i can use it. the next thing i hear is 'sploosh!'. uh oh. my ol' trusty phone decided it was time to take a little swim in the toilet. argh! before even giving my own hygiene a second though, i quickly reach in and grab it. i tear off the battery and try and dry it out as best i can. unfortunately, i cant. the water had already reached the innards of the phone and it was done for! it was gone, and along with it all my photos and contacts. what a pain!nerdy gifts
it works out well though, because for christmas i got her something equally nerdy! she loves the show 'glee' and watches all the episodes. usually i find something else to do while she's watching it (she does the same when i watch stargate...). every time she watches it though, she kept ranting and raving about the necklace that the main girl on it wears. i, thanks to the endless knowledge of the internet, was able to find one for her. she was thrilled and wears it proudly. almost as proudly as when i use my stargate coaster!

rack-o!
we ended up having a bit of time in the evenings to just hang out with mom and papa. knowing my mothers love for games, we asked if there was something we could play. one of her favorites is rack-o. one night we pulled it out and introduced it to diana, who had never played it before. mom got a huge thrill out of having some one to play games with- she was in her glory! diana rather liked the game and we ended up playing it a couple nights during the week. one of the nights we played phase 10, and even got papa to play with us!

massive movie day 2: the sequel
sunday with the family
sunday morning we went to church with the family and got to hear some great choir music to get us in the christmas spirit. we got home and tim, jill, and the kids soon followed. we had a delicious dinner mom prepared for us and hung out in the living room for a while afterward while the kids kept peeking over at all the prizes under the tree! we took a little sunday afternoon nap, and in the evening diana met up with one of her friends, josh, to catch up. i figured i'd give them some time, so i went over to aaron and jeffry lees for an hour or two. we hung out and had a good time. it was a nice relaxing day. i put up this picture of poco because i dont have any photos from my phone from that day. more on that story soon...
the verve show '09
for some reason the guys were a bit worried about it being sold out this year, so we headed downtown early. doors opened at 8:00pm, and we were there by 8:30. turned out there was nothing to worry about, we got in no problem. but since we were there so early we just hung out in the lounge up front for a while and talked. by the time the opening band was done, we went back into the concert area. papa vegas, another local band that was kind of big 10 years ago, opened up for verve pipe. i have a couple of their cds, so i really enjoyed hearing their songs again live. by the time verve pipe hit the stage we were having an awesome time. i know just about all their songs, so i really love singing along to them live. diana doesnt know quite as many of them, but she had a blast too! the highlight of the night was definitely listening to them play 'colorful' while dancing with my wife. that song is a very special one to me. i had spent many many lonely nights in years past listening to that song longing for the day i would be able to share it with a girl, and now that i could hear it live while dancing with the most beautiful girl in the world? well, i felt a deep sense of joy and contentment in that moment. every once in a while i am reminded how good life is, and that was certainly one of those moments.
the rest of the concert was magnificent, and we all agreed that we look forward to doing it again next year!

merry christmas
my favorite version of the christmas story, as John tells it in his gospel:In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
christmas concert
our school has a christmas concert each year. i usually attend, but this year it was nice because diana wanted to go as well! we sat and listened to the beginner band and the recorders, then the regular band played, along with the choir. midway through the concert, diana leaned over to me and said 'make sure i call my dad when we are done and thank him'. later i asked her why, and she said that when she was in band in middle school she was always so excited for band concerts, but didnt understand why her dad always seemed to hate them. now, hearing a middle school band play, she realizes why it was such torture for her father! it hurts the ears, but still her father went to support her. at this age the kids are not exactly what you would call 'good', but its fun to watch them give it their best!

cover the walls
part of the reason i had been dragging my feet on it was that she had a couple pieces of art that her dad had made that she wanted to hang up. these pieces are pretty heavy and i knew that just a regular nail in the wall was not going to be strong enough. i wasnt sure what the best way to make a stronger hook would be, so i just kept procrastinating. well, with papa and mom here this weekend, we figured we could ask him about it (he's a pro at such things. i sure wish some of that had rubbed off on me...). after getting a package of wall anchors at the store, papa hung two pieces and the clock we had gotten months ago as a wedding present. nice to finally get around to using that gift... after mom and papa left, diana kicked me in the but enough to get me to hang the rest of the artwork in the living room and kitchen. we still have a couple more pieces to put up, but the place is looking more and more homey. diana is very pleased!

decoration shopping
after we hit up menards (we had go get a few things for hanging pictures on the walls too), we went over to cabela's. mom and papa had a few gifts they needed to get from there, so we wandered around there for a while, which is always fun! they even had free food samples for us to try- fancy!

organiza-shed
when papa came down last time we built a shelf in the shed. it looked great and i knew it would really help organize everything in there. about a week later i finally got around to going out there and putting stuff in order. going through all the junk and trying to sort it a bit better was nice. at one point i had a very hard time even opening the door to the shed because all the stuff was scattered everywhere! but now, all is in its place. i think i need to get out there once more to have everything right where it should be, but it is looking pretty good so far!(more pics)
forgotten cheese
last weekend diana went on a (much needed) cleaning spree. the kitchen was a bit of a mess, not terrible or anything, we keep up on the dishes and keeping it clean and everything, its just that it was getting cluttered and unorganized. she went through all the cupboards and drawers and cleaned them up and organized all the food and stuff. as she was going through the fridge, she happened to notice we had a container of parmesan cheese. we pulled it out and it had been turned from powdered cheese into a block of cheese. i'm not much of a chef, but i'm pretty sure that means its no longer any good... she showed it to me and i had a pretty good laugh at it! it was a D&W product. this is why its funny: D&W hasnt existed for about 4 years! it used to be a grocery store chain in grand rapids, but was bought out by family fare years ago. needless to say, i dont use parmesan cheese very often... when i saw it i got a bit nostalgic- D&W was the brand we always used when i was growing up! its always a bit funny to find an old relic in the fridge. it reminds me of the time i found a ketchup packet years ago in our fridge from raxx. ah, remember raxx?...
social hour
man, its been too long since we hung out with jordan and jonathin! jordan is one of diana's friends from her home depot days, she got married to jonathin this spring and now they live a bit south of us. every once in a while we are able to get together with them, and i always love it! jordan is a ton of fun, she loves to chat and always has some great stories to tell. she came to diana's school a couple weeks ago and diana got to cut and color her hair. jonathin is a blast as well, he is a lot of fun to talk with, and he's really funny! last night diana got a text from jordan asking if we wanted to go out together. we met up with them at applebees for dinner and had a great time! we werent able to do anything afterwards because diana has class today so we couldnt stay out too late, but it was a lot of fun to see them again. next time, though, it needs to be longer- we hung out for a couple hours, but i felt like we had just gotten started!
seriously?!?
now, i must admit, i am a bit of a scrooge when it comes to christmas decorations. i know they have their place, but six weeks early just seems like too much. to put out decorations this early seems very rude to other holidays. what about thanksgiving? i'll bet thanksgiving is sulking in the corner right now feeling altogether ignored! poor thing.
toy soup
our school has been thriving. even with all the economic problems right now, our enrollment has been steadily increasing. due to that fact, last year we built a six classroom addition. the building project unfortunately took away some of the land for the playground equipment that the kids would use during recesses. instead of seeing that as a problem, it was an opportunity to better use the space we have, and so the school purchased some great new equipment for the new play area. unfortunately, rebuilding the play area was quite expensive: new equipment, new woodchips, new swings, new sidewalks. so, as a way of diverting that cost, the school has a semi annual soup supper fund raiser! the teachers were asked to volunteer to help out with different aspects of the event. since my gift is in art, i was in charge of decorating the gym a little bit for the event. i spent a couple days drawing, cutting, taping, and laminating, and made a bunch of decorations for the walls. diana and i were able to attend the soup supper, and boy was i surprised at how it went! i thought it would be about 50 or so people who would show up, but by the time we got there (an hour after the event started), there were at least 150 people, with more shuffling in each minute! wow! it was really neat to see such community support for the school and so many people willing to pitch in with the fundraising! oh, and the soup, bread, and salads were really good!(pictures of the decorations here)
lunch time meet up
last weekend diana and i had the pleasure of meeting up with diana's mom and david for lunch. they were visiting diana's grandmother, helping her with some housework. before they got started, they came with grandma for lunch at strongbow inn, a really great buffet-style restaurant in valparaiso, near where diana's grandmother lives. the food was great, and it is always a great time when we get to see diana's family! we both ate too much, but thats how it goes when there is great food around and family to chat with.
a real revelation
a few weeks ago i was driving home from school and i saw that one of the local churches was going to be having a class on the book of revelation. i've always been interested in the book, but it always seemed to be too much to handle alone, all that symbolism and imagery. i talked with diana about it, and we decided we would check it out. over the past five weeks we went through the entire book of revelation, reading through it and trying to decipher what it means. the pastor, david trexler (at gloria dei church), lead us through the book and opened up many of the mysteries and meanings behind this cryptic book. the insight he gave was refreshing and challenging- he blew my mind! now, i spend every day studying the bible for my job, so it is a rare feat for me to be blown away by a new perspective on scripture- but he did it! one of the weeks we were driving home from the class and i was trying to discuss it with diana, but i was too overwhelmed with all that amazing new teaching that i had a hard time constructing a sentence! what started out going to this class on a whim has turned into a renewed passion in our faith! i sure hope he teaching another class soon!
the sandman
lately i've been having some strange dreams. over the past week or two my dreams, for some reason, have been very vivid and i can actually remember them when i wake up! usually i forget them almost immediately, but they have been lingering in my mind through out the day. in one of them my old dog mollie was still alive and she and i went on a journey through the woods. another one involved jeffry lee building a giant remote controlled robot and attacking me with it, although he was nice enough to take a break from killing me so that we could stop and play some video games together. very kind of him. and for some reason, in all my dreams, i am wearing two different types of shoes. i dont claim to know what any of it means, but it sure has made sleepy time a big more interesting!p.s.- yes, my pillow actually does have a pokemon pillow cover...
finishing touches
papa came down to indiana this saturday to finish up all the work on the shed. its been almost a year in the making, but now we can finally say, once and for all, it is complete! we had a few more things to do with it to finish it up: some edging was needed on the outside, and a shelf was needed on the inside. papa arrived bright and early, well, early for a saturday... i was already out there clearing out the shed to get our wood supplies that had been stored in there since last year. as we were working, it got hotter and hotter. this was quite a change, usually when papa comes down we are bundled up in 40 degree weather! it got all the way up to 70 degrees by midday! i went in at one point and changed into shorts! we took care of the trim and the shelf, and before we knew it, we were done! the shed looks great, and it will be much easier to organize now that we have that shelf- thanks papa, i know you could have been out golfing instead!
muffin man
often when diana and i go to see my parents, my mom has freshly made raisin bran muffins for us. they are really really delicious! diana and i always love to eat them for breakfast when we are there. well, mom decided to give us the recipe so we could make them ourselves. while the family was visiting us, the women went to the grocery store to stock our kitchen for us (thanks again, mom!), and mom got us all the ingredients that we would need to make those tasty muffins ourselves. so we decided to give it a try. they turned out perfectly and we have been enjoying them for breakfast almost every day since- yum!
in the house
once lunch had been eaten, the kids wanted to play a little bit. i pulled out a few transformers for bubba to play with. the girls turned to diana and asked 'do you have anything for us to play with?' and it just so happened that she did! diana went into the office and pulled out a box of her old barbie stuff- the girls were thrilled! they had a great time playing with their favorite aunt, and the rest of us got a chance to just chill out and chat for a bit while they were preoccupied.
eventually though, it was time to leave. we wished all of them good travels, and said our goodbyes. then came the hard part: clean up!
