man's best friend

i cant help myself! it seems that i pull out the camera at least once a day just to take a picture of my dog! he's been living here for three months, but i still cant get enough of him- he's just so dang cute! recently he has rediscovered his little teddy bear toy and has been playing with it every day. the toy itself is really cute because its so small, which is nice because that means its poco size! he has had the bear for a long time, but every once in a while he will rediscover it and be obsessed for a while with it. its well used and really ratty, diana's sister even had to sew on its arm after one particularly violent playing. the really funny part is that its got a squeeker in it, so when poco puts his paw on it it squeeks- this amuses him to no end! he will sit for ten minutes straight pawing it to make squeek. its annoying, but outrageously cute! watch a video of it here! also, here are a bunch more poco photos because i cant help myself: 1, 2, 3. man, when diana and i eventually have kids, i am going to be so annoying with the camera, i just know it...

movie monster

since summer has started i've been busy catching up on movies. i dont get a chance to see many movies in the theater, but i have been able to watch a bunch of dvds. instead of paying to rent new dvds i've been going through my own collection and rewatching some of them. now, i've given myself a dvd challenge! find out about it here!

treats and talks

when we got back from the park, it was time for a little dessert! off we go to the ice cream shop! we all got some ice cream and walked down to the picnic tables by the beach and enjoyed our time together.
later on that night, once the kids were in bed, diana and i went over to tim and jills trailer to sit outside and talk. we dont get many opportunities, so we made sure to take advantage of the time we had together. we chatted the night away and before we knew it, it was midnight! timmy had to work in the morning, poor guy. in the morning we packed up and visited mom at her work for lunch. we had to keep it a bit short though, because we had poco with us and didn't want to leave him in the car alone for too long! we made the rest of the trip home and diana got ready for her big day ahead- tuesday she goes out on the floor and cuts actual customer's hair! she is really nervous!

play break

when we finished dinner, diana and i figured we could give jill and tim a break. we hopped on the cart and took the kids for a ride. we drove for a bit and went to a little playground in sandy pines. it was one that the kids had never been to, so they really got a kick out of it! they first ran to the swings and had a blast! diana and i pushed them, even making them twist themselves as they went back and forth. they had a great time and their parents were happy about the little break.

pizza pizza

the power was restored to the whole park, so that meant that the pizza shop was open again! we decided to get together with everyone and get some pizza. mom and papa didn't have the phone number, so diana and i rode over to the pizza shop and put in our order. it was only going to take twenty minutes, so diana and i walked around to the balcony and had a seat. with a great view of the beach we were able to just enjoy the sun and the time together.
by the time we got back the kids were all there with hungry bellies!

sprinkles

usually the kids love to go to the water park out at sandy pines during the afternoon, but unfortunately the park was closed because it didn't have any electricity. so, the kids made due with the next best thing: a sprinkler! the sprinkler was set up for them in the front lawn and they went nuts with it! they had such a great time, they even convinced diana and i to join them! we had no problem getting wet and playing around with them, we all had a great, soggy, time!

papa's day

sunday was father's day, and diana and i got to be with my dad for the day! we drove back out to sandy pines sunday for lunch. (sandy pines chapel was cancelled due to half the park being without power, so we even got to sleep in!) for lunch mom had prepared some great chili and a ham loaf, that way papa could just sit back and relax and wouldn't have to do the grill. we had a great meal- its always a great time when we can be around the family! jill and tim even gave papa a cool picture album they had printed up for him of the kids! unfortunately papa wasnt feeling so well, he had a stomach ache, but he was able to enjoy the day anyway.

fire engine red

jeffry lee and i had planned on doing something saturday night. the idea of having a campfire at freddies was the main plan for the night, but something went terribly wrong... diana and i got back to my parents around 9:00pm and hung around waiting for jeffry lee to call so we could head over. finally, at 11:00pm freddie called and said they were just arriving at his place. diana was way too tired by then to go, but she recommended i should still go. so, i tucked her in bed and headed off to freddies. when i arrived it was just freddie, and jeffry lee was sleeping in his car in the garage. what exactly happened to get us to this point? apparently the two of them had been at the beach in grand haven all day, stopped of at a friend's party, and got caught up in the fun. i had no problem at all with this, but it did create the unusual experience of having jeffry lee incapacitated by the time i arrived. he had had a bit too much to drink, and was bright red with sunburn! poor guy! freddie and i helped him out of the car and into the bathroom. with much amusement for us, jeffry lee was wrecked! we eventually convinced him to put some aloe on his bright read skin, then we put him to bed. the night wasnt a total loss though, i got to chill with freddie and talk, just the two of us, for a couple house. i had never had the pleasure, and now that i have, i really appreciate him more. its always great to build friendships!
p.s. sorry for the disturbing picture, i didn't mean to startle you...

me casa

saturday we went out to sandy pines to see the family. we slept in a little bit and then left from home to see everyone. we brought poco with us again, so we first had to stop and my parents place to drop him off. we got him set, then drove out to sandy pines. when we got there briefly got to see the kids, then we went with my parents and their friends to a mexican restaurant in fennville called 'su casa'. the food wasnt the best, but the company was fun! my parents friends are so good at treating us as equals, we arent just my parents kids, but we are adults just like them. we were invited to join them for their weekend campfire, but unfortunately, we had made plans to see the guys that night.

coasting

a few years ago my dad got me some coasters from the apple orchard store, they are personalized and say 'mark's bar', which i really loved.but now, diana and i have been trying to class up the joint, and the bar coasters just don't make the cut. so, we went shopping at bed bath and beyond and found these cool sandstone coasters with a big 'B' on them. i'm not entirely sure what the 'B' stands for, but i like em!

rex in effects

this past week rex came down and visited! he's had a bit of free time on his hands lately, and since school got out, so have i. i gave him a call early last week and invited him down for some good old fashioned hanging out time. he accepted, and thursday morning he came down! we had really low expectations, we both just wanted to watch some good movies and enjoy each others company. we certainly succeeded in both of those goals! on thursday we first went to the library to get some good movies to watch (hey, the movies are free and we are cheap!). we left with six movies, then proceeded to watch five of them that day! when diana came home she joined in the fun as we ordered some p'zones from pizza hut- delicious!
diana soon went to bed, and the party continued! rex and i watched a couple more movies before calling it a night. friday we got up and got back to the busy work of movie watching! after we finished off the library pile, we got cleaned up and ready for the day. we headed out to return the movies and we stopped by the used dvd shop to sell off some of my old dvds. after stopping off at 7-11 for a slurpee, we went back to the house. with nothing else pressing to do, we watched another movie!
that night diana and i had plans to see a movie with jordan and jonathin, so rex happily tagged along. we were glad to have him with us! after the movie we went to fridays and just hung out and chatted. after we got home, rex packed up and headed home, the next morning we headed to grand rapids as well. it was really great to hang out with rex and have some quality time with him.

porch view

the weather was really nice last week, so diana and i took advantage of it. we unfortunately dont have a nice deck or nice patio furniture, but we do have a couple camping chairs. so we pulled them out and sat out front on the little 'porch' outside my front door. we both grabbed a book and spent a half hour or so just enjoying to light breeze and the beautiful 70 degree weather. we even brought poco out there with us! ahh, now this is what i think of when i think of spring!

year end round up

each year, at the end of the school year, the whole staff is invited to lunch at texas corral. it is always a fun time to just relax and enjoy some time with the other teachers and staff as we celebrate another year successfully completed! i guess it says something great about our school in that all of us teachers really enjoy spending time together, huh? it seems that each year we end up having to say goodbye to at least one colleague, and this year is no different. this time we say goodbye to rachel, the english teacher. she and i were hired here the same year and have, at times, been very close. she will be missed! it will be strange next year to not have her with us. one of the elementary teachers will actually be moving up to fill her spot- it will be a good fit! i know this school year has just finished, but i'm already looking forward to the start of next year (well, i don't really want the summer to go fast or anything though...).
(more pics)

school's out!

ah, another year finished- one of the best feelings in the world! i've still got a ton of grading to get done, but it sure feels great to know that i have a couple months off. i'm planning on getting a summer job this year, but i haven't really done too much about it yet. one thing at a time, i guess.

a penny squished...

ever since the guys and i first went to disney world back in 2000, i have had an obsession with penny crunchers! what's a penny cruncher? its those strange machines that you put a penny in, turn the crank, and out comes a squished penny that has a novelty image printed onto it! i think i squished a couple dozen pennies while we were at disney. well, i've kept an eye out for penny crunchers ever since then, and have turned it into a mini collection. i guess diana shared this strange fascination i have with her sister(i guess shes my sister too, huh? well, sister-in-law anyway...), because she recently sent me one! she was in seattle visiting a few friends recently and sent diana a card. included with that card was a squished penny from seattle! awesome! she's the best sister-in-law ever!

the first cut

diana is a couple months in to her schooling now, and has been having a great time so far. the past two weeks they have been focusing on the actual hair cutting part of the training. at the end of the two weeks, they are required to have a model come in and they have to actually cut their hair. diana was terrified! fortunately, miranda was willing to be her first volunteer! miranda drove down here thursday night and spend the evening with us, which diana loved! the two of them got to just hang out and catch up. i made myself scarce that evening so the two of them could have a good time together without me butting in.
in the morning miranda went with diana to school and sat for a haircut. it certainly went well because when the two of them got home diana was smiling and miranda's hair looked great! now that diana has overcome that challenge its time for the next one: on june 22 she goes out on the floor to begin cutting hair full time! yikes! diana is really nervous, but if miranda's hair is any indication, she has nothing to worry about.

super change man

ever since i first moved here i have been keeping my change in my superman piggy bank. when i got here he was empty. well, last week he finally filled up! i could no longer fit even a single penny more! it's a pretty big change bank that always sits atop the refrigerator, collecting pocket change. it sure took a long time to get filled, but i think thats because he only gets pennies, nickels, and dimes (the quarters are sorted out for laundry use).
so, how much was in there? find the answer here!

flow rider

we got to diana's mom and step-dad's place and hung otu for a while there. we had dinner with them, her dad came over too. after filling our bellies we took a nice relaxing ride on their boat. at dinner i mentioned that i had never driven a boat before, so when it was time to hop on the boat, david offered me the driver's seat! awesome!!! there is a 'no wake' policy, and the boat has to stay under about five miles per hour. that's probably why they knew they could trust me behind the wheel... we took a slow and relaxing trip around the lake, going close to shore so we could see all the wildlife in the woods and in the water. it was a great time! diana and i always have such a great time when ever we see family! we had planned on heading home around 8:00pm that night, but i think we finally left their house around 10!

empying house

over the weekend diana and i made plans to go and help her mom and step-dad. the house diana used to live in was put up for sale- and sold in one day! nice! well, they needed a little bit of help with cleaning the place up for the new owners to move it. diana and i didn't have any other plans and were happy to stop by and help.
we arrived saturday morning (later than we expected, but what can you do?) and quickly got to work! they had a big trash container in the driveway, so all we needed to do was fill it up! we got right to work and started clearing out the basement. there was a ton of stuff down there, much of it was from when diana and her sister were growing up. after a pizza lunch break, we put in another hour or two. the new owners were actually there too taking care of the lawn and a few other things. as we were going through all the stuff to throw out, they actually wanted to keep a lot of it! mostly it was old dressers and tables and furniture. apparently the new owner loves to refinish stuff and is a wiz at woodwork, so a bunch of stuff that we were going to trash actually stayed in the basement. we didn't care- it meant less work for us!
(more pics)
afterward we packed up to go and spend some time at diana's mom and step-dad's place. as we were getting into the car, the impact of the day hit diana: this was going to be the last time she would ever be at this house. this is the house she grew up in- so many memories! as that reality started to sink in she had to take a couple minutes. her mom sat with her and they spent a few minutes coming to terms with the change that was taking place, a sort of loss in some ways. i have never had to deal with that, my parents are still living in the house i grew up in. i'm not sure how i would handle it. but it is certainly something that deserves a moment of reflection and a realization of what is passing. every once in a while you just have to take stock and realize the changes that happen, both good and bad. as diana enters a new part of her life, a life with me, she still must celebrate what came before and appreciate the changes. it helped me remember this important truth as well.

a little poco

i havent had a dog in more than 10 years. we always had one in the house growing up, but since i moved off to college i havent had a little pooch running around the house. now that i do, i have been going photo crazy!
now i understand that some of you might disagree, but i think this little chihuahua is one of the cutest things ever! really, its gross how cute he is through out the day! due to that fact, i take far too many pictures of him. here, for your enjoyment, are a bunch of those pictures: 1, 2, 3, 4

memorial sickness

unfortunately, diana's upset stomach turned into a full blown sickness. after an hour or two of sleeping, she got up and still felt terrible- and it was getting worse. she and i made the decision to head back home instead of stick around and get everyone else sick. we called mom and dad and let them know we were going to head back early. they were disappointed, but understood.
when we got home diana laid down on the couch, and spend the rest of the weekend there. by morning her stomach was feeling ok, but her throat and sinuses were wreaking havoc on her! by the time she had to go to school on monday she was still feeling a bit under the weather, but stocked up on cold pills and cough drops, she pushed through it! its always disappointing to cut short our time with the family, but this way diana got her rest and no one else got sick. i'm not sure how i got lucky and avoided it, probably because i have a highly developed immune system- you have to to spend every day around snotty nosed middle schoolers!
(sunday night poco was really cute- check out this video!)

papa's b-day

sunday morning diana and i headed back out to sandy pines and met up with everyone at the chapel. after church we went to mom and papa's for lunch with tim and jill and the kids. it was papa's birthday, and we were there to celebrate! we sat down outside and had a great meal of tacos and beans. afterwards we went onto the porch and got some time to talk at have some cake. well, some people had some cake. dad's favorite is german chocolate cake, which has a lot of coconuts in the frosting, so i passed. we gave him his birthday gifts (except diana and i who had foolishly left his gift at the house. oops).
all day diana wasn't feeling so good, so she and i headed back home so she could take a nap and hopefully feel better for the evening.

grill out!

every year my parents and all their friends at sandy pines get together for a memorial weekend grill out. its always at my parents place (i'm not sure if its because my mom is always a great and eager host, of just because they have the biggest deck) and all the kids are invited as well. its nice to see everyone again, but its always kind of strange to have a meal and chat it up with guys who i used to hang out with a bit over the summers 15 years ago...
this memorial weekend also marks a special day for diana and i: last year over this weekend i asked her to marry me! now look, one year later and we are husband and wife. cool.

freddie's place

it turns out that freddie's mom actually has a place out at sandy pines too! during the week freddie, jeffry lee, rex, and i talked about meeting up there and hanging out for the day. it worked out really well too, they arrived there in the early afternoon. diana and i rode over there after we dropped off the kids. when we got there the guys were just hanging out grilling up some hot dogs and brats.
we had a good time just chilling outside and catching up- it had been since the wedding that the guys got to see diana! after they were done with lunch we rode over to my parent's trailer and hung out there for a bit.

playing around

after a short cart ride, diana and i took the kids over to the playset in the park at sandy pines. they had a great time! first, all three of them wanted to go on the swings- which there were only two of (of course). then it was time to do some sliding! all three of them loved to go up, down, through, and around the jungle gym set. the whole time on there each of them were trying to get our attention to show us what amazing feat they were able to accomplish 'look! i can go up the steps!', 'look! i can go down the slide!', 'look! i can climb the bars!' and i must say, diana and i were totally impressed...

memorial friday

when diana came home from school today she had a little surprise for me: she straightened her hair!!! wow!!! i had never seen that before- and boy was it amazing! i really love diana's curly hair, but it was really awesome to see it straight for once- super hot!
for memorial day weekend, diana and i headed up to grand rapids to see my family. diana doesn't get home from school until 6:00pm, so its a pretty late trip home on friday. we brought poco up with us again , it worked out pretty well the first time, so mom let us do it agian. *editors note: i have recently been informed that we didn't actually ask mom if we could bring poco again, we just brought him anyway... oops.* we didn't end up leaving until about 6:30pm, which meant an arrival around 10:00pm! we dropped poco off at the house, and then went to meet the guys at fridays! it was a ton of fun, diana and i sat down by aaron and we got to have some really silly conversations over the course of the night.

sandy pines breakfast

saturday morning diana and i got up and headed over to sandy pines to see the family. we got there around 11am, and soon headed over to tim and jills. the kids were very excited to see their and diana and i, and we were thrilled to see them again too! when we arrived they were there just getting some breakfast ready. they invited us to join them, so we all sat down and had some great pancakes and sausages- thanks tim!

j & j's reception

after the wedding we headed over to the reception hall (which happened to be on the other side of the world!), after the 40 minute drive (only a slight exaggeration), we arrived and headed in. diana had to stay out in the lobby for a little while so she could be introduced, but i headed in and sat with levi and miranda. it was a lot of fun! as the night went on we had some great polish food, some great candy, some good cake, and a lot of fun dancing. it certainly felt like a celebration for jordan and jonathen, and what more can you really ask for from a wedding, huh?
(more pics: 1, 2)

j & j's wedding

during the wedding i sat with miranda and levi, which was nice because i dont think i knew anyone else at the wedding at all. diana looked really great up there! oh, i guess the bride looked nice too...

j & j's rehearsal

one of diana's good friends from her old job, jordan, got married recently. diana was asked to be one of her bridesmaids, so she was really involved in all the wedding stuff. the day before the wedding diana drove down to elkhart, where the wedding was, and do all kinds of bridesmaidy type stuff. friday after school i headed over there as well to join them for the rehearsal dinner. it was great to see jordan and jonathen again, jonathen actually lives only about fifteen to twenty minutes from us in indiana, so we are really looking forward to having both of them around now!
(more pics)

a student again

one of the big decisions diana and i made before we got married was that diana was no longer going to be working at home depot. she never really liked the job, just the people she worked with (which she wouldn't be working with anymore, since she would have to move to a different location), so we saw it as an opportunity for her to move on and do something she actually enjoyed. ever since she first went to college, diana has wanted to go to cosmetology school. she was never given the opportunity, so she graduated from grand valley with a business degree instead. she was never interested in using it, so she just found a job where her friends were at home depot.
well, one of the opportunities i am able to offer her is the chance to do what she had always wanted to: to go to cosmetology school! we are able to live on my salary, so she now has the ability to attend school and follow her dreams. she recently started at regency, a cosmetology school thats in illinois and has been loving it! her first day of school she came home with a couple of huge bags full of all the stuff she will need for the next 10 months of schooling! that night she sat on the ground and picked through everything and checked out what is in store for her. she was as giddy as a school girl! (which i guess makes sense, since she's a girl now going back to school...) she is really looking forward to the classes she will be in soon- but really nervous as well!

the kids and i

for diana's birthday, my mom wanted to take her and my sister (whose birthday is just a week or two earlier) on a little shopping spree! the plan was to go to the mall and pick out an outfit or two and my mom would get them for the girls as their birthday gift. it worked out great for diana because she was starting school that monday and needed some new clothes for it!
the week before we were to come up for that event, my brother in law realized that he was going to have to work that saturday morning and it was too late for jill to find a babysitter for the kids. jill was going to back out of the festivities, but then i realized that i didnt have anything going on that morning and it finally dawned on me: i could easily watch the kids!
saturday morning diana and i drove over to jill and tim's place. jill and diana headed out to meet up with mom, and i got to spend the day with the kids! it was a ton of fun, we even went back to my parents house so that the kids could meet our dog poco for the first time!
(more pics: 1, 2, 3, and a video of the first time they met poco)

a brink time

when i was growing up, the brink family was never really very close. i'm not entirely sure why, maybe it was because my uncle and his family didn't live in michigan, or if it was because my dad was quite a bit younger than his siblings, or it it was because my grandpa had died when my dad was in his early twenties. it was probably a combination of all those things and more. anyway, it often felt like the only thing keeping the extended family together was my gramma.
she passed away a little over a year ago. we miss here very much. the oddest thing happened when she left us: our family came together! ever since then our family has been growing closer and closer together. at our wedding everyone was there and had a great time seeing each other! in honor of the one year anniversary of gramma's passing, we all got together at my cousin katie's house. diana and i arrived a bit late (thats what happens when it takes three hours to get home...) but had a great time seeing everyone! my uncle and aunt were in from out of town, so we got to see them too. it was a great time just catching up with everyone and remembering gramma- i'm sure none of us would mind doing this every year. or more often than that!
(more pics: 1, 2, 3)

easter visit

for easter we headed back up to grand rapids to spend it with my family. sunday we went to church with the family at friendship crc, then everyone came over to mom and papa's for dinner. we played with the kids for the afternoon and had a great time! it was the first time we got to see everyone since the craziness that was the wedding, so it was great to just be able to relax and not have a hundred million things looming over us that we need to talk about and plan! it was nice and relaxed- well, as relaxed as you can get with three kids running around!
(more pics)

guests

now that we have the place looking good, its nice to have some guests over! miranda and barbara, diana's sister, had some free time so they came down to visit us! i was at work most of the day, so i did not get to join in on all the festivities, but when i got home we went out to eat at the thai restaurant with them.
a week or so later, diana's other friends, jordan and jonathen, came by to visit as well! they are a lot of fun! they are getting married soon and live only about fifteen minutes away, so i'm sure we will be seeing a lot more of them!

rub-a-dub dog!

with having a dog in the house with us, we did notice one thing in particular: the smell! well, it was time we took care of that one with a little puppy bath. diana got some dog shampoo and put him in the tub.
it was hilarious to see him all wet- he looks even more like a gross rat!
(more pics: 1, 2, and a hilarious video!)

poco's run

with having poco around we knew that there was going to be a bit of extra effort needed to keep him from making a terrible mess of the place (and i think you know what i mean by *mess*...). so, instead of taking him on 7 walks a day, we figured we would make a special place for him to run outside by himself. we went and got some rabbit fencing and steaks and set up a place for him in the backyard.
it worked. kind of. he likes to go back there, but just yelps if we put him back there by himself. having a dog certainly has its challenges... it took him a few weeks (and a few accidents), but he's starting to feel a lot more comfortable here in his new home.
(check out his dog run here!)

cleaning up

now that everything was where it should be (diana and i included), it was time to clean up! the place still had a distinctive 'bachelor pad' feel to it that needed to be taken care of. we fixed up everything that needed fixing, got rid of a ton of stuff: everything including a vacuum, old bedding, a very old set of pots and pans, and a bunch more! goodwill was quite happy to accept our cast offs. now with all the old stuff gone, we found places for all the new stuff! it was really fun to go through everything and figure out a place for it together. most of it was easy to figure out where to put it, but other things were a bit harder to deal with (really? i dont even get to keep my own clothes in the bedroom?!?).
(more pics: 1, 2)

new bed

diana's mom and step-dad had never come to see my place before. now, with diana living here, we figured it was time for them to stop by!
my bed was not very old, but i was in the bad habit of sleeping right in the center of it- which meant that when diana and i were in it we fell into the middle of it! the best to fix this problem: get a different bed! diana's step-dad has a truck, so we enlisted him to bring diana's bed over to the house when they came to visit. we met up with them on sunday and took off the cap on the bed and loaded up the bed with them. then they followed us back to the house and we exchanged the beds: mine to the truck, diana's to the bedroom! it went really smoothly, and it was a lot of fun to have diana's parents come and see the place she was now going to be living in!

the first time

we began our married life together as i'm sure so many before us have: hungry! when we got back from the honeymoon the shelves were barren- we needed some food fast! we got some groceries and then made ourselves our first meal. it was really cool to be able to sit down at the dinner table, eat food we had prepared ourselves, and just enjoy each other.
the food was great, it may not have been fit for a king, but it sure was good to me!
(more pics)

new bedding

we were planning on getting rid of my bed and bringing diana's from her old place. we will be getting it in a few days, but thats far too long a wait for diana- she wants to put on the bed sheets and comforter now!!! we cleared off the old bed stuff and opened up some more wedding gifts- the bedding! diana had her eye on this set for a long time, in fact we painted the bedroom to match this set! check out how it all looks here.

new cupboards

one of the many fun parts of getting married is getting all kinds of wedding gifts! diana and i had picked out some new dishes and glasses for us to use. those hideous plates that i used to have were given to goodwill- good riddance! (i dont remember exactly where i got them in the first place, i think they may have been cast offs from jill when she and tim got married...). we also got some great new silverware. i gave away my old stuff, except for an awesome set i had gotten just a couple years ago from chad while he was in germany- they are much too cool to get rid of!
this is a picture of the old dishes in the cupboard, click here to see how the new stuff looks!

our home

and then we came home. to a mess. argh, i already wish i was back in cancun...
one nice thing about coming home is that for the first time its not just my home, and diana isnt just stopping by for the day, she gets to stay! she doesnt have to try and get back on time cause she has work tomorrow, she gets to stay! this place is no longer my bachelor pad, now this is where a new family lives! man, this make take some getting used to...
