so, I listen to a lot of podcasts. a lot a lot. my absolute favorite is battleship pretention. its amazing. one of the hosts, david bax, on the show is from st. louis and often talks about how much he loves the town. diana and I were wondering where we should go to get some local flavor, so I figured i'd ask him. ah, the marvels of modern technology! in the morning we were sitting around the hotel room and I opened up the ol' twitter and sent him a message asking if he had any suggestions for a couple tourists in his hometown. about twenty minutes later he responded with a few suggestions. what? how crazy is that! one of his suggestions was for a little out of the way restaurant that has amazing egg salad sandwiches. diana was up for a little adventure, so we went downtown to tour a really cool place called the campbell house. afterwards, quite hungry, we went looking for the place david recommended.
the place is called crown candy, its a restaurant and candy store that's been there for over a hundred years. we went in and its clear that they haven't changed much since it first opened- which was awesome! we were seated at a cute little two person booth and ordered ourselves some egg salad sandwiches. he was not wrong- that was one of the best I've ever had! it was really cool to eat at a place with so much history and to see a place so off the beaten touristy path.
thanks again, david, for the awesome recommendation!

downtown walk
off to st louis
we took our time driving down there, stopping at a couple places along the way, finding ourselves a really great mom and pop diner and checking out the touristy stops along the way. we booked ourselves a room south of the city. the first day we got there we checked in and settled in. the whole plan for this trip is just to take it easy. we weren't here to have a schedule filled with sight seeing, which is good cause there aren't that many sights to see in st. louis...
birthday red robin
after the fun of crazy bounce, we went to eat at one of ledger's favorite restaurants: red robin. the six of us scooted into a booth and had a fun time talking and being silly. savannah gave ledger a birthday gift- an adorable stuffed animal kit that he loved! the two of these kids are so fun and funny, they kept us entertained and in stitches the entire evening! savannah loves to chat, she wasn't intimidated at all being with 4 adults at dinner. she was telling so many stories that she hardly even had time to eat her meal! ledger was chatty too, but he didn't have any problem at all downing all his macaroni and cheese... when the ice cream came he was too busy trying to steal savannah's left over macaroni to even notice!
after dinner barbara and dad headed back home. ledge was so happy to have them join his special day! now, with all their energy gone and their bellies full, we headed home.
birthday bounce
we did the family birthday thing, but now it was time for a birthday party with a friend! we invited savannah to join us in celebrating ledger's birthday. her mom dropped her off and we headed out to holland to go to crazy bounce! barbara and diana's dad wanted to celebrate as well, so they drove up from south bend and joined us at crazy bounce. ledger was so pleased to have them join us, and even more pleased to be able to bounce around! the two of them were balls of energy and ran around the place for over an hour going from one blow-up to the next. ledger really loved the slides and bungie run, but savannah was obsessed with the obstacle course. barbara joined them for a while, but otherwise they were just interested in getting our attention to watch as they did different silly tricks on the blow-ups! finally, after they were both good and exhausted, we wrapped up our visit- drained of engery, but quite content.
7th birthday party with brinks
somebody is turning 7 and boy is he excited! with ledger's birthday almost here, my family invited us over to celebrate. jill and tim hosted a special birthday party for our little guy. ledge always loves to get together with his cousins. even though they are much older than him, he still love to see them. this party also served another purpose- a bit of a house warming for tim and jill! they moved just a couple weeks ago and wanted to show everyone their new place. the house is amazing- its great to see them move into a place that's big enough for them, they were getting a bit cramped with three growing kids in the old place. now they've got lots of extra room to grow. they gave us the grand tour and we got to see how they've settled in to the new place. ledger's favorite part, of course, was the trampoline in the backyard!
jill and mema had prepared a delicious meal for us, and then it was time for ledge to open up his gifts! everyone had, as usual, showered him with too many gifts. he didn't seem to mind too much though...
science night
one of ledger's favorite school events is science night! north ward does a special evening where they invite everyone to come and check out some of their cool science related activities. they have a bunch of things for the kids: science experiments, slime making, build your own robots, ice cream making, and some really cool programing activities with different robots. needless to say, if it's robot related, ledger is all in! we met up with ledger's best friend savannah and her family. the two of them ran around the whole event, going from room to room doing all the different activities and having a blast!

k-ville gathering
for the past four years a few of us from kelloggsville middle school have been getting together for a sort of unofficial class reunion. adam and some of the girls spearhead the effort, planning the date and location, making sure to invite as many people from our class as they can track down. this year, a few days before the event, I got a text from adam saying that he had tracked down a special guest. I was excited to hear that! I asked him 'is it mrs. jager? if not, could we invite mrs. jager?!?' well, I must have some sort of sixth sense or something because it was mrs. jager! she was our English teacher in middle school and she was a favorite among students- we all loved her soo much! she had such a positive impact on my friends and I that we still reference her regularly as one of the best parts of our childhood! and now, here she is, visiting us as we gather together, her 8th grade students 25 years later! we were all so delighted that she came and showered her with questions and memories about those wonderful years! she is still sharp as a tack, though now in her 70's. she remembered each one of us and was asking questions about our parents and siblings that she also remembered. wow! its always good to catch up with my former classmates, but the chance to spend an evening with mrs. jager? now that's priceless!
columbus concert
ledger and his class have been practicing their song for the past couple weeks. its time once again for the annual music concert for his school. each year every grade in his school puts on a show at the high school auditorium. each grade learns a song in music class and then they each perform, kindergarten through fifth grade, and put on a show. this year's theme was Christopher columbus (ugh...) so ledger and his class performed a song about him. ledge was really excited about the presentation and the chance to go up in front of the audience and do his thing! all the kids did very well and it was hilarious to see the younger kids who didn't really understand what was going on!
workmates movie
breakfast with penny
its been a really long time since we got to see penny. when we first moved to michigan jon enlisted our help babysitting his little penny. while we lived with my parents we would go over there a few times a week and watch her. it worked really well because he only lived about a mile and a half away from my parents. when we moved to allegan we still watched her for a while, but weren't able to continue. we hadn't been able to see her much after that.
we decided to fix that- jon and i made plans to get together for breakfast on a day we both had off of work. we had a great time and the kids were so excited to see each other and play around with the jellies and cream cups! when we first saw them ledger was so shocked by how much bigger penny had gotten, the last time he saw her she was barely even walking! even though she didnt really remember ledger, they were fast friends! it was great to see the kids together and its always nice to see jon and allison. we will have to do it again sometime!
first shave
when ledger takes a bath he often likes to keep the door of the bathroom open so he can still chat with us from the tub. he often asks if we want to come in there and 'chat' with him. sometimes i'll oblige and actually take that time to shave while we chat. one day I was shaving and ledge was just really interested. I asked him if he wanted to try it. he said 'but I don't have beard yet, daddy'. oh, I know, but its never too early to give it a try! ok, he was up for it! so we went through the whole process of washing his face and putting on the shaving foam. I handed him the razor and told him that he could use it to pretend to shave his face. instead of the sharp bit, he held it backwards so he wouldn't get cut or anything. he really liked it, but thought it was pretty weird. 'am I going to have to do this all the time when I'm big?' ledger asked. well, judging from how hairy your daddy's face is? yes, so you better keep practicing!
movie with mikey
every once in a while we get the chance to hang out with mike and his family. he told me at work that he and the mrs. were taking their boys to see the new 'how to train your dragon' movie and wondered if we wanted to go too. I talked to diana and ledge and they were all up for it! mike's little boy is only a year younger than ledger, so they have a ton of fun together.
we met up with them at the theater and got snacks. when we got in the screening we realized that we were going to be the only ones in that showing! well, that meant that the boys were unleashed! we found our seats, but the boys wanted to sit by themselves so they could be a little louder and silly during the movie. no problem since no one else was there! by the end of the movie they had spent most of their sugar rush and made a huge popcorn mess. fortunately we didn't have to clean it up. sorry theater workers...

just the two of us
my work schedule is pretty awesome, I only work three days a week (granted, its 12 hour days though) which means I get 4 days off a week. i'm spoiled, I know. will all this time off it means I get to spend a bunch of time with diana! usually we just do stuff around the house or run errands, but every once in a while I can talk her in to going to see a movie with me! we don't really have a babysitter in our town that we use, so if we want to have a special date night together, we actually have to made it a date day and go out together while ledger is at school. there is a movie theater a few miles away that actually opens up at 9am, so we just go see an early matinee and go out for lunch afterward.
see, romance is still alive, right?
goodbye rental
I've been a land baron for many years... not really, but that's always been the joke term we've used since we own a rental property. I've had it for many years, basically since I first moved to Indiana back in 2003. when I first moved there for a job I went down and looked for an apartment. I didn't have much luck, everything was too expensive. I was just a lowly Christian school teacher- I certainly didn't have much money to spend on an apartment just for little ol me! i had gone around to all the places i had heard about and didn't find anything i could afford. everything was too expensive, really gross, or way too small. i could handle small, but a 400 square foot loft apartment for $750 was a bit much... about to give up, i went to the local grocery store to pick up one of those weekly ad things that they put by the newspapers (this was before everyone had the internet on their phone and people still read the newspaper...). i noticed a two bedroom for only $500. wow- what a find! i went to check it out and it was a duplex. i hadn't even thought about looking at duplexes, i just assumed they would be too expensive. i really loved it and convinced the guy to let me rent it. i was very releaved to have a place to stay that was in my budget. a couple months after settling in and feeling comfortable in the new job and new place, i saw a sign on the front lawn that said 'for sale'. uh oh! thinking the worst, i gave my landlord a call. 'i saw the for sale sign. does this mean i'm getting kicked out?' 'nope', he said, 'the new owner has to honor the leases'. what a relief! my next question i asked was 'ok, how much are you asking?' and within a month i owned the place! it was really cool to own the whole duplex, i lived in half and rented out the other side, which meant that the renter actually paid the whole morgage- i was living rent free! but it did mean i had to do a lot of repairs and stuff. a small price to pay to own my own place!
a few years later i met and married diana (i know, i still cant believe it either!). she moved in and we made ourselves a home together. we went through some rough times with renters, everything from needing to call the cops, taking a delinquent payer to court, many many plumbers, and even digging out the front yard! when ledger was born the small place got a little tight and we moved on to another place, but we still kept the duplex. we rented out both sides and maintained it even when we moved up to Michigan. thought it was often frustrating to manage the place long distance, it was still worth it due to the extra income. this past winter we had a lot of issues with the place- we had to replace the roof, furnace, water heater, and a bunch of issues with the plumbing. it was getting to the point where we were actually loosing money on it for the year! well, that was enough of that then. we decided it was time to let it go, it was time to relinquish my role as land baron... we went about finding an agent and getting it listed. much to our surprise, it was a very hot property! we actually ended up raising our asking price two times- and then accepting a bid that was several thousand above the highest asking price! not only were we going to get rid of the rental property headache, but we were going to be paid quite handsomely for it! we were beside ourselves with delight!
after all the paperwork went through, we headed down to visit the old place one last time. it was good to see it again with diana and reminisce about it for a while.
goodbye, old friend, you served us well but you will not be missed!
